Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then found many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
