RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
