TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.

Within moments of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to current price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
